What is the rule of thumb for valuing a business?

When valuing a business, some industries may use a rule of thumb guide to calculate how much a business is worth; in the most basic sense, businesses are valued at around 2x-3x their annual profit. However, business valuation is also based on a range of factors such as revenue, customer engagement, locations and business reputation which are harder to calculate.
